I live down the hill from the Willamette National Cemetery. Understandably it's always packed at Memorial Day, but I like to go when it's quiet.
The place is huge, and there is something very intense about so many servicemembers buried in one place. I never spend a moment there without tearing up, feeling humbled and grateful and truly awestruck at the power of their service and sacrifice.
My prayer: may I be the kind of citizen whose daily life honors and appreciates such sacrifice. Our liberties are not to be taken for granted, and our civil rights are not to be worn roughshod. So many have given too much to allow such a travesty.
